SAINT JAMES
PARISH
CHURCH
(XII century)

Located in the centre of Gavi, it has a Latin cross-basilica and is the most important religious monument of the Genoa Oregiogio. Dedicated to St. James, it preserves the memory of the route of Compostela on which it stood. With a Romanesque and Lombard style, it has undergone significant transformations in the Baroque period, with the removal of the original wooden trusses, the construction of vaults and the opening of large windows on the sides. The bell tower is significantly raised in height and the main bell was placed in 1352 by the Visconti, the then lords of Gavi. The façade is of extraordinary beauty in its linearity and simplicity: in the lunette of the monumental portal sits a high relief representing the Coena Domini with the Christ at the centre. Above the portal, a small shell-shape dome symbolizes the pilgrims.

SANCTUARY
OF OUR LADY
OF THE GUARD

It dominates a unique view from above. It was erected in less than four months in 1861 thanks to the help of the population of Gavi and the surrounding areas that took part in its construction. It stands on the Turchini Hill and is an elegant temple with a Greek cross layout.

ABBEY OF
SAN REMIGIO

An ancient settlement built by the Benedictine monks in Parodi, it was used for centuries by devotees as a religious and cultural centre. With the 2010 restoration, the monastic complex that had been abandoned for years found a new role as an institutional site hosting art events and enhancing the territory. Located at the centre of the Albedosa torrent valley that bears the same name, the Abbey of San Remigio rises from a small ancient village that has developed all around it and with which it forms a single complex. The abbey retains its original charm and is unmistakably intriguing still today, after 1000 years from its foundation, when travelling down from the provincial road of Gavi one cannot help but admire the profile of the Monastery, nestled amongst the hills covered by vineyards and the woods.

ORATORY OF
THE CONFRATERNITY
OF SAINT MARY MAGDALENE

At Novi, the Oratory of the Confraternity of Saint Mary Magdalene is a clear example of the cultural heritage of popular religion and local traditions: in the XVI century it was the place of worship of the Brotherhood of St. Mary Magdalene, wanted by Pope Clemente V, and of the SS. Crocifisso. Of particular pictorial beauty is the group of sculptures of the Mourning over the Dead Christ, dating back to the first half of the XVI century. Eight colour terracotta figures surround the deposed Christ, the only statue that is unrelated to the original composition.

SHRINE OF
THE MARTYRS OF
THE BENEDICTA

The Shrine stands inside the Parco delle Capanne di Marcarolo in memory of the Nazi-Fascist massacre of 147 partisans who died here between April 7th and 11th 1944 due to a tactical error of the Resistance Forces.
Once the site of the German round-up, this ancient abbey is today a monumental complex. Between 2000 and 2009, following its restoration and recovery, the Shrine of the Martyrs of the Benedicta was established, and the related massacre is recalled every year with a national celebration.
