A scenic and surprising Gavi

Different eyes to tell the story of an area

The language of artistic photography narrates the Gavi territory in an unconventional way

The photography award announced by the Consortium for the Protection of Gavi, as part of the "Gavi Experience" wine and territory promotion project, aims to tell the story of the territory of the great Piedmontese white wine through the emotional and professional filter of art photography.

The works of the three winning artists, along with a selection of projects from the more than 50 submitted, are exhibited at MIA - Milan Image Art Fair 2021 at SUPERSTUDIO MAXI from Oct. 6 to 10, in the space dedicated to the Gavi Exploring Prize.

Here Loredana Mantello, Monica Silva and Tiago&Tania are honored on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at a vernissage accompanied by a tasting of Gavi Docg, the great white wine from Piedmont that originates in the lands described in these auteur images.

"We are very satisfied with this project," concludes Maurizio Montobbio, President of the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi. The artists' gaze has really succeeded in capturing the emotions that our territory knows how to convey and also allows ourselves, so immersed in a dimension of everyday "normality," to see our territory with new eyes."

"The photographs taken by the winners are far from 'social shots' and 'postcard illustrations.' Loredana Mantello, who won the first prize, Tiago&Tania and Monica Silva - runners-up ex aequo - have returned, in images, the emotions and sensations felt while exploring the Gavi Docg territory and creating three unconventional photographic narratives that artistically interpret landscapes, history, colors, monuments and people."

CS Exploring Gavi Award

FIRST PRIZE WINNER: Loredana Mantello

"Between Heaven and Earth" is the project of first runner-up Loredana Mantello: the delicacy of the prints, the careful composition of the planes, the progression of the vision by diptychs, and the graceful but intriguing use of inscriptions on the images characterize this very personal proposal. The image returned is that of a poetic, at times dreamy territory with a millenary flavor: "...immense spaces, infinite lands, sweet interweaving of landscapes, peasants, and poets."

SECOND PLACE ex aequo: Tiago&Tania

With "Land of History," Tiago&Tania propose a two-dimensional reading of the territory by alternating frontal views with shots from above. The geometries of the majestic walls of the Fortress of Gavi, a symbolic monument of the territory, and the sunburst rows of vines blend with the undulating softness of the vine-covered hills, the narrow streets of the village, and the passion and care of the Knights of Raviolo and Gavi towards the territory.

SECOND PRIZEwinner ex aequo: Monica Silva

Monica Silva, on the other hand, plays on color, with a more experimental approach. In her project "The Skies of Gavi," the hues used are shades of the colors of wine, grapes, earth and vineyards. The artist
projects us into a dreamlike dimension conveying "unique and unforgettable messages, just like a
good glass of wine at the end of a day to give peace to the senses, to relax looking at the skies,
painting the clouds."
