The Consortium

A representation of the Producers at Vinitaly

Who We Are.

Since 1993, the Consortium for the Protection of Gavi has been engaged in the protection and enhancement of the territory's most expressive product: GAVI Docg and its appellation included in the 11 municipalities of Bosio, Capriata d'Orba, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Gavi, Novi Ligure, Parodi Ligure, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia, and Tassarolo in the Province of Alessandria.
The qualification work of the Consortium and all producers is aimed at strengthening this territory, a healthy, economically active reality that invests in quality and research.

The Consortium represents all Gavi docg producers, not just members.

It is an Erga Omnes entity that acts in favor and support of the entire chain of producers, winemakers and bottlers and has as its mission the PROTECTION for the preservation, improvement, environmental sustainability of the production, territory and terroir of Gavi and VALORIZATION to promote the image of Gavi in Italy and around the world, participating in fairs, organizing workshops and courses, inviting opinion leaders, journalists and buyers, in order to spread knowledge of the territory and its wine production of excellence.

The Consortium's role is to preserve the area's millennia-long winemaking history, the deep winemaking culture of the appellation and the vocation for quality and elegance of the great Piedmontese white wine, now a world-renowned and appreciated wine.

The Institutional Label

Every year since 2013, the Consortium for the Protection of Gavi has entrusted the Italian Sommelier Association with the task of blind tasting the samples sent by the companies to select the Consortium's institutional bottle.

A label to enhance the Great White Piedmont.

This globe-trotting bottle throughout the year is sent to the editorial offices of news outlets, is the star of international tasting tables at events, and is the queen of events organized by the Consortium as representative of the personality of Gavi Docg.

Each year, the institutional bottle label celebrates an event or recounts a corner of the Denomination's territory through the brushstrokes of an artist.

Passion, commitment and quality

The Consortium for the Protection of Gavi founded in 1993 is the body for the protection and promotion of the GAVI DOCG appellation.

Promotion and Enhancement

Activities to promote Gavi docg include participation in national and international trade fairs in the sector, presentation of wine production to the main guides (Gambero Rosso, Espresso and Winesurf) and organization of workshops and tastings, press tours and educational events.

The Valorization of Gavi as an expression of its Territory is declined in various ways, especially through the "Di Gavi in Gavi Festival" and the format "Tutto il Gavi a ..." that brings the story of the D.O. in the main Italian cities.

The Consortium's Institutional Bottle is a fundamental communication and enhancement tool for the historical, cultural and architectural heritage of the Gavi docg appellation.

Protection and Supervision

The Consortium for the Protection of Gavi is committed to the protection of the winegrowing heritage of the D.O. through a series of tools ranging from monitoring and research on vine diseases (Flavescenza dorata, Mal dell'Esca, Asian Bug...), to technical notes concerning the phenological season trends and grape ripening curves. These activities are complemented by the organization of conferences and field activities aimed at the training and information of winegrowers.
Sample analyses are also carried out on bottles to check for the presence of pesticide residues in wines, related to the regulations on "import tolerance" values allowed in the main foreign destination countries of Gavi DOCG: USA, Canada, Europe and Japan.

Important for sustainability is the Environmental Biomonitoring Project with bees, in collaboration with Aspromiele.

The Consortium is commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out supervision activities on Gavi Docg during the marketing phase: bottles are taken from both large-scale distribution (e.g., supermarkets) and Ho.Re.Ca. (wine stores and specialty stores), which are subjected to analysis to verify their compliance with the production specification.

Member Services

Services to members include legislative advice on labeling of D.O. wines and technical advice on quality development in the vineyard and winery.

The Consortium supports companies in communicating promotional activities and shares member news on social media, giving them visibility to the accredited press.
