Gavi DOCG

THE DESIGNATION

The Gavi DOCG designation includes, in whole or in part, 11 municipalities in the Province of Alessandria:
Bosio, Capriata d'Orba, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Gavi, Novi Ligure, Parodi Ligure, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia, Tassarolo.

VINEYARD AMPELOGRAPHY

Gavi DOCG is traditionally produced from 100% Cortese grapes, grown within a predominantly hilly, precise geographical area of the southern end of the province of Alessandria.

VINE TRAINING, PLANTING LAYOUT AND PRUNING METHODS

The Guyot pruning system is often used in quality vine-growing, with average plant layouts ranging from 2.4 to 2.6 metres between rows, and 0.9 to 1.2 metres between vines, with an average of between 3,300 and 5,000 vines per hectare, so as to achieve the best and most functional arrangement of vine surfaces, both to facilitate cultivation and allow functional management of foliage. This allows for adequate exposure of the leaf surface and makes it possible to contain the yields of wine production within the limits established by guidelines (66.50 hl/ha for basic varieties and 45.50 hl/ha for Riserva varieties).

CLIMATE

The microclimate of the production area, which is characterised by abundant rainfall from October to April (619 mm), hot and dry summers (minimum rainfall in July is 38 mm) tempered by the influx of sea winds, and the mild temperature and excellent sunshine in September allow the grapes to mature completely, contributing significantly to the sensory features of "Gavi DOCG" wine. The vast difference in temperature between night and day that characterises the last stage of grape ripening intensifies the scents that are typical of Gavi DOCG aromas.

GAVI DOCG QUALITY AND FEATURES

The "Gavi" or "Cortese di Gavi" DOCG refers to 5 types of white wine: Fermo, Frizzante, Spumante, Riserva and Spumante Riserva classic method which, from an analytical and sensory perspective, have very clear and unusual characteristics.
In short, Gavi DOCG has quite a faint straw colour with greenish reflections, a tasteful and delicate scent with hints of fresh fruit and white flowers, as well as citrus and bitter almond notes, enriched by complexity and ageing mineral aromas; it has a dry and full taste that is pleasantly cool, harmonious, sophisticated and refined.
The Reserva varieties, as well as fruity scents, have a wide nose and a fuller and richer mouth; a long-lasting white wine that preserves its freshness but is distinguished by tertiary aromas that make it comparable to the world's best wines.
